Which flooring is best for the laundry room?

Whether you have a laundry room as a separate room in your house, or are planning a laundry room in a residential building, this room always needs a special floor. It could be compared to the bathroom, as humidity and moisture must also be expected here, but it is more of a useful space than a place of relaxation. It follows that functionality is more important than design.

What should the floor be like?

First, the classic question should be asked, what characteristics the floor in the laundry room should have, what you expect from it. The answer is very clear. Resistance to water and moisture is important. If you are also using the room as a drying room, you can expect water from wet laundry to drip onto the floor. This could damage some floors. Water on the floor could also bother you. Slipping with a full laundry basket is definitely not pleasant, so a non-slip floor would be good.

Another important aspect that most people consider is the price. After all, it's just a utility room that you don't normally visit, so it doesn't have to be anything special. So the luxury version is really unnecessary in the laundry room. Therefore, concentrate on the practical.

What is definitely unsuitable?

The worst option is probably a carpet. It would always be wet and the chemicals used to remove stains could also harm it. All it takes is just a little bit to get on the floor and you'll have a permanent stain.

Laminate is certainly also an unsuitable floor covering for a laundry room. It is common knowledge that laminate flooring lifts when exposed to water. Of course, a drop doesn't make any difference, but if the water stays on the floor for several hours, the floor becomes soaked and has to be replaced completely.

Wood also doesn't like water and chemicals. Excessive moisture causes bulging, open joints and mold. It's also quite expensive fun. It is completely unsuitable for rooms where water is to be expected.

What else should you consider?

An acceptable option is classic ceramic tiles. They don't mind water as they are normally used in bathrooms. The wide range of offerings is also pleasing. One disadvantage, however, is the price offer; you have to add the price for laying, which is often higher for one square meter than the tiles themselves.

Another solution that saves you money is vinyl flooring. The selection of different patterns is practically as wide as the tiles and you can also choose whether you prefer classic, durable tiles or large vinyl planks. Look at the offer very carefully, because there are also differences between the PVC tiles.

Because of the moisture that has to be taken into account, a non-slip floor that is not affected by water and chemicals is good. The Terramondi tile has an anti-slip pattern, is chemical resistant and has a drainage channel system at the bottom that ensures the drainage of moisture. This prevents mold formation. If water gets under the tile, the tile can be easily removed, the floor dried and the tile put back in.

Do you really want to pay craftsmen as well?

All you need to lay the Terramondi tiles is a rubber hammer and a knife. A person of average skill can do the laying without any professional help; everything is ready in an hour. In most cases you can get by without creating a leveling layer. Since there is no price for the work, tiling a 20 m2 room will cost you around 760 euros.

Some floor coverings are cheaper per m2, but after adding the work and the amount for the surface preparation we get very similar amounts. As an example, let's take another 20 m2 room and lay linoleum there. For leveling with self-leveling compound you pay 5 – 12 euros per m2 (i.e. approx. 170 euros). We calculate the price for the actual linoleum to be 12 EUR per m2 (240 EUR in total), but for heavier-duty variants it can easily be 23 EUR/m2. Go ons the labor has to be added - around 21 EUR per m2, because gluing and welding is simply expensive. In total we come to an amount of 800 EUR.

As another option, we offer classic vinyl flooring with a click system, in which the planks are either just laid or glued. Here too, the subsurface needs to be leveled (EUR 6/m2) and work by the floor layer (EUR 8/m2). The price for a normal vinyl floor for apartments is around 16 EUR/m2 (we don't expect anything expensive here either). After adding them up, we get 600 EUR.

The Terramondi PVC tiles are not much more expensive than other alternatives and everyone can decide whether they want to pay extra for a little more quality and an innovative solution. There are many reasons to do this. In addition to those already mentioned, we can also mention resistance to wear, impacts and easy local repair. The tile can easily be removed and replaced. In addition, you can be confident that you are buying the tiles for decades to come. The guarantee is 12 years, but the tiles last much longer. You may end up moving these to a completely different room and not the laundry room. The application is diverse.
